Back in the day ...

My earliest interaction with computers goes back to 1986 and 1988 when my friends and I had the Sinclair Spectrum, Commodore 64 and Atari ST (my first official PC!). In those days we were very competitive about "clocking" games as we used to say (to get to the end of a game or finish it) which wasn't always possible, and multi-player simultaneous games were the best, as we could compete head on. For the other second rate games we simply had to rely on highest score (usually stored internally) to figure out who ruled what game. When I wasn't playing games (which as you can imagine was hardly ever!) my Dad would teach me programming in "Basic" which was lines of code starting with 10, 20, 30 etc, I never really used it but it helped me later on in Computer class in middle and high school. I never really got into programming languages as a specialization but it has helped academically (in undergrad classes) and with learning HTML and other scripting languages in system administration. As with most kids in those days my interest in computers and games alike grew from the earlier consoles like ATARI and the portable ones like "Game & Watch", ha haaaa, my favorite was the octopus and the diver!
